Moving Options

 

Americans are on the move. Over 18% of Americans move each year and up to 80% of those will relocate during the summer. The figures are no different for Utah. Currently Utah is experience significant growth with many people moving into the state. If you plan to move soon, there are some options available to make your move as smooth and safe as possible.

Two major moving options are available to most families. Move yourself or hire a professional mover. The major advantage to moving yourself is less cost. The advantage of utilizing a professional mover is less headache and safety. However, safety can be compromised by finding the wrong mover.

Un-licensed and unprofessional movers often use the internet to market themselves. National chains are a better investment and worth the extra money. Discounted movers often provide less service, hence the cheaper price. Moving is a service and as with most service-based businesses “you get what you pay for.”  Attempting to save money by finding the cheapest moving company may cost you more in the long-run.

A big issue facing movers is timing. Since so many people move during the summer months, moving companies can find themselves over promising and under delivering. Moving companies experience up to 90% of their business during the summer months and many of them will overbook moving trucks and moving personnel to try and capture as much business as possible. Clients of these companies are often disappointed and find themselves behind schedule in moving into their new home. These types of moving companies can cause trouble for those that plan things in detail and have short deadlines.

Another option not often explored is to utilize a professional transportation company and do the loading yourself. In this method, the transporter drops off a trailer, you load it and call them when it is ready to transport. This method involves some risk of injury to yourself or the neighbors that help you load and additional risk to your property if you do not load plan correctly. However, the safety of using a professional company to transport your household items with your lock on the door of the trailer may be a viable alternative.

Plan and research early so you can find the right option and the right moving company or transporter for you. Ensure that the company you select is licensed to perform the services you require and that they have adequate insurance.
