Provo, Utah is located fifty miles south of Salt Lake City in Utah County. Provo is named after an early trapper to the region in 1825, Etienne Provost. The area was originally called Fort Utah when settled by the early Mormon pioneers. Provo is home to Brigham Young University (BYU), the second largest private university in the U.S. The city serves as the county seat for Utah County. The city has around 29% of the county's population. According to the 2000 Census, the population was 105,258.
